Will AI Eclipse Expectations?

Here in the College of Natural Sciences, we recently experienced a pair of solar eclipses – one being the first total eclipse over our University of Texas at Austin campus. When the comparatively tiny moon blocks out an experience of the gigantic sun, I’m reminded of other humble forces that surprise us with their power. Those forces include our distinct science and mathematics community here at UT; they came together, thousands strong, to experience the joy and wonder of nature’s greatest show on April 8.

Another impressive force lies with our amazing researchers, motivated to ensure a safe and impactful path ahead with new developments in artificial intelligence. As you’ll read in this edition of our magazine, UT scientists use new AI tools to tackle challenges that range from learning how the sun formed to developing new antibiotics and vaccines. UT recently proclaimed this a “Year of AI,” as we delve into not only technology but also its place alongside our unique consciousness.

Our campus remains packed with experiences of discovery. It’s a place for advances in transformative technologies, for awe at the natural world and for achievements of marvelous human potential.
